From a small village nestled in the Nagaon district of Assam, comes a powerful story of determination, renewal, and quiet triumph. Meet Nayan, a once-struggling youth who is now a respected name in Assam’s eco-friendly craft industry, known especially for his skill in water hyacinth-based products.

From Setbacks to Self-Discovery

The youngest of five brothers in a farming family, Nayan’s early life was marked by hardship. After completing his Higher Secondary exams, he ventured into the supari (areca nut) trade with a partner. But fate had other plans—the business failed, leaving him with a crushing debt of nearly ₹3 lakh. A second attempt in rice trading lasted only two years before it too came to a halt.

Struggling to find stability, Nayan turned back to his roots. He began cultivating vegetables on his late father’s land, selling them in the local market. During this phase, he also dabbled in bamboo craft—a pursuit that unexpectedly opened the door to something more meaningful: handicrafts made from water hyacinth, an invasive aquatic plant.

A New Beginning with NEDFi

In 2008, Nayan enrolled in a water hyacinth craft training programme by NEDFi, where master artisans from Thailand introduced him to advanced techniques. The training changed his life. Within a year, his talent and commitment earned him the role of Master Trainer—a significant milestone that fueled his belief in this sustainable craft.

Building a Green Business

By 2011, Nayan received his first big break—a bulk order of 100 water hyacinth bags from a client in Noida. He completed the consignment on time, with exceptional quality. That moment confirmed his path.

Today, Nayan runs a successful eco-craft enterprise that produces bags, slippers, and other sustainable lifestyle items. His small workshop has become a livelihood hub—he sources raw materials from nearly 50 local collectors and works alongside 130 skilled artisans, most of whom are rural women. His monthly revenue exceeds ₹1,00,000, and his work supports a vibrant local ecosystem.

Eyes on the Future

Yet, Nayan remains grounded. He continues to observe and learn, especially from Thai artisans whose products use longer, more pliable water hyacinth fibers. His dream is to improve quality, innovate designs, and scale up sustainably—without losing the heart and soul of the craft.

Through grit, learning, and a deep connection to his community and environment, Nayan is not just earning a livelihood—he is creating a legacy of green entrepreneurship, dignity, and hope.
